CLEP Assessment

The CLEP (College Level Examination Program) offers a wide range of college-level exams through which you may receive college credit.

If you have acquired knowledge through experience or prior academic learning that may be equivalent to college-level courses, Hawkeye offers the opportunity to get credit for that knowledge.

Eligibility

Find out before you register for a CLEP test whether or not you are able to establish credit through CLEP. This will avoid any possibility of duplication between courses you wish to take and the examination.

For example, if you have completed or are in the process of completing a college credit course, you are not eligible for CLEP credit in that course.

If you are testing to receive credit at another college, please refer to that institution’s eligibility policy.

Preparing for the CLEP Assessment

Most CLEP exams are 90 minutes long and are administered on the computer. This efficient delivery system provides immediate results, with exception of an essay component.

CollegeBoard.com offers information and practice materials to help you prepare. In addition to official materials—some that are free, some have a cost—CollegeBoard.com provides suggested online resources, gives tips on how to find appropriate textbooks, lets you practice with the calculators provided in the exams, and provides insight into the knowledge and skills required for each exam. Be sure to visit the specific exam page for each test you plan to take for the most in-depth information.

Registration Procedure and Fees

CLEP is given by a scheduled appointment only. Advance registration is required.

To register for a CLEP exam:

    • This fee is non-refundable and is required to secure your test date.

  8. Bring your receipt from the Business Office to your scheduled exam.

Military service members and spouses may qualify for DANTES funding for the CLEP exam. See Who Is Eligible for DANTES-Funded CLEP Exams? [pdf] for more information.

* Fees are subject to change.

Your CLEP Scores

All students will receive a score immediately after testing, with exception to a test with an essay component. You will be mailed a score report from CLEP within four weeks.

As a Hawkeye student, you may earn a maximum of 30 credits by CLEP examination(s) while earning a degree at Hawkeye.

Candidates taking College Composition will receive an official score report from CLEP within six weeks.

Hawkeye Community College CANNOT and DOES NOT assume responsibility for transferability of CLEP credit to other colleges and universities.

A CLEP examination can be repeated after three months using the regular registration procedures.

Send your official score reports to the Admissions office in order to receive possible credit.
